Povzetek:
God and Satan war over earth; to settle things, they wager on the soul of Faust, a learned and prayerful alchemist. During a plague, Faust despairs and burns his books after failing to stop death; Satan sends Mephisto to tempt Faust, first with insight into treating the plague and then with a day's return to youth. Mephisto is clever, timing the end of this 24 hours as Faust embraces the beautiful Duchess of Parma. Faust trades his soul for youth. Some time later, he's bored, and demands on Easter Sunday that Mephisto take him home. Faust promptly sees and falls in love with the beautiful Gretchen, whose liaison with him brings her dishonor. Is there redemption? Who wins the wager?

Mefisto, kojeg briljantno glumi Emil Jannings, nudi ostarjelom Faustu mogucnost
da povrati svoju mladost, uz cijenu da mu preda svoju dusu.
Faust je visoko stilizirana, raskosna njemacka produkcija, uznemirujuce realistican u vremenu
svog nastanka, temeljen na prici Johanna Wolfganga von Goethea i kazalisnom djelu
Christophera Marlowea, koja je F.W. Murnau donijela ugovor s holivudskim studijem Fox.
Skoro svi kriticari su pozitivno ocijenili film.
Fernando F. Croce je u svojoj recenziji, u kojoj je filmu dao 4 od 4 zvijezde, napisao:
"Filmovi iz njemacke ekspresionisticke ere su slavni zbog svojih zestoko stiliziranih realizacija,
a za Murnaua ta artificijalnsot medija je donijela kljuc za predstavljanje njegovih istina",
Michael W. Phillips Jr.:
"Remek-djelo ekspresionističkog filmotvorstva, nijemi klasik koji je na zalost duboko oslabljen
u ukocenom drugom cinu. Ipak, usprkos toj mani, prvi, apokalipticni cin i treci, fatalisticni,
cine ovo jednim od vizualno najzanimljivijih i najuzbudljivijih filmova nijemog razdoblja.
Odlična ekspozicija predstavlja cetiri jahaca apokalipse kako jasu iznad Europe; Sotona i anđeo
se svađaju oko sudbine svijeta...Lokacija filma tijekom vecine njegove radnje se nalazi u Pragu
tijekom epidemije. Dizajn scenografije i kamera u ovom filmu su prava cuda; osobito u sceni u
kojoj se ogromni Mephisto nalazi iznad makete grada i njegova sjena pada na njega".
Roger Ebert:
"Katkad osjecam, u ovom razdoblju strucne kompjuterske animacije, da mi biva pokazano previse -
ta tehnika potiskuje umjetnost i mastu. Svijet "Fausta" nikada nije bio namijenjen da bi se identificirao
pravi fizicki svemir, nego da bude krajolik nocnih mora".
