    Kad je homoseksualnost još bila apslutni tabu u Engleskoj, osetljivi đak Stiven Karter iz ruralnog grada krije svoja gej osećanja, osim od svoje komšinice, devojke koja se zove Linda. Iznenada  njegova očajnička potraga za partnerima u javnim klozetima dovede do sastanka na slepo sa “zlatnim đakom generacije” Džonom Diksonom , pred kojim je karijera na Oksfordu. Stiven pronalazi hrabrost  da priđe Džonu kao dobrovoljac, sportski fotograf školskog časopisa. Nastaje divna veza, ali Džon se plaši da će izgubiti svoj društevni status . Kako ljubav cveta, tako raste očaj zbog tajnosti veze i posledica u slučaju  da se ta veza otkrije.
