Povzetek:
St. Louis 1903. The well-off Smith family has four beautiful daughters, including Esther and little Tootie. 17-year old Esther has fallen in love with the boy next door who has just moved in, John. He however barely notices her at first. The family is shocked when Mr. Smith reveals that he has been transfered to a nice position in New York, which means that the family has to leave St. Louis and the St. Louis Fair.

St. Louis 1903. Imućna obitelj Smith ima četiri prelijepe kćeri među kojima su Esther (Judy Garland) i mala Tootie (Margaret O'Brien). Sedamnaestogodišnja Esther je zaljubljena u njihovog novog susjeda Johna (Tom Drake), ali on je ne primjećuje. No najveći šok dolazi kada obitelj sazna da je gospodin Smith dobio izuzetnu poslovnu priliku zbog koje bi se morali seliti u New York.
Irving Brecher i Fred F. Finklehoffe, scenaristi filma, adaptirali su seriju kratkih priča američke spisateljice Sally Benson i stvorili izuzetno zabavno djelo prepuno šarma i glazbe.
