Povzetek:

Starica u polju kupusa pronalazi mušku bebu, prisvaja je i odgaja. Nakon što starica umre, dečak Toto odlazi u sirotište.
Kao srećan mladić on ga napušta i kreće u potragu za poslom u posleratnom Milanu. Uskoro se priključuje beskućnicima i podstiče ih da izgrade daščare, malo naselje, na poljani. Tu otkrivaju naftu, ukazuje mu se starica, njegova negovateljica...
