Glazbena romantična komedija o dvjema sestrama Parižankama koje se nađu usred neočekivanih romantičnih zavrzlama. Odile (Sabine Azéma) je sredovječna Parižanka čiji je brak s Claudeom (Pierre Arditi) ušao u kolotečinu koju će, misli Odile, promijeniti kupnja novog stana. The latest from 77-year-old French director Alain Resnais (``Hiroshima Mon Amour) is a pleasant bit of fluff. ``Same Old Song, which opens today at the Lumiere, tells the story of a half-dozen Parisians who keep searching for happiness and bumping into one another.
The films central gimmick is borrowed, with due acknowledgment, from Dennis Potter, the English writer known for ``The Singing Detective and ``Pennies From Heaven. In the Potter films, characters inner thoughts were revealed in fantasy sequences in which they sang and lip-synched to old pop songs.
In ``Same Old Song characters also lip-synch to songs, but here the interludes last no more than seconds. Unlike in the Potter films, the songs dont reveal inner yearnings, and theyre not incorporated into fantasy productions. The lip- synched dialogue is treated like recitative in opera. No one notices that anybody is singing.
If the pop tunes in ``Same Old Song serve any purpose at all, its in setting a tone of lightness and whimsy. But this is a puny benefit for a device thats arbitrary and precious and results in slowing down scenes and conversations for no reason but cuteness. If this device has other virtues, their effect is lost in the translation. Aside from perhaps Edith Piaf and Maurice Chevalier, the singers, not to mention the songs, will be unrecognizable to most Americans. Even worse, Americans wont have a social context in which to place them.
``Same Old Song is 120 minutes long and should have been 100, at most, though the film gets by on charm throughout. Screenwriters Jean-Pierre Bacri and Agnes Jaoui wrote themselves the juiciest roles. Bacri plays Nicolas, a suave chauffeur who is also a raging hypochondriac. He goes to one doctor who tells him, ``Dont come back.
Jaoui plays Camille, a tour guide who is writing her thesis in history. The movies best running bit involves Camilles telling people her thesis topic: ``The yeoman of the year 1000 at Paladu Lake. No one quite appreciates how interesting yeomen are.
The picture traces Camilles bout with panic attacks and depression and puts her into a romance with a handsome sleaze (Lambert Wilson). Veteran actor Andre Dussollier, who usually gets the girl, plays the older friend who pines for her.
