Povzetek:

Leto 1914. Na nemški tovorni ladji, ki prevaža konje v Afriko, se skoti konj Lucky. Kmalu po prihodu na črno celino ga ločijo od mame, zato je prepuščen sam sebi. A ne za dolgo, saj ga posvoji osiroteli deček Richard. Njuno druženje prekine vojna. Richard skupaj z drugimi ljudmi zbeži in Lucky spet ostane sam. Zdaj mu ne preostane drugega kot da poskrbi sam zase. Napoti se v puščavo, pri tem pa spozna kup drugih živali in deklico, ki ga nauči, kako preživeti.
