Film je inspirisan istinitom katastrofom, potresom koji je
pogodio San Francisco 18. aprila 1906 godine.

Krčmar i kockar "Blackie" Norton (Clark Gable) posjeduje Paradise Club
u zloglasnom Barbary Coastu. Norton unajmi lijepu i siromašnu ali obećavajuću
pjevačicu Mary Blake (Jeanette MacDonald) koja postane glavna atrakcija i zvijezda
u Paradise Clubu sve dok impresario Opere, Jack Burley (Jack Holt) ne ponudi Mary
mogućnost nastupa u Operi.
"Blackie" Norton i impresario Jack se tako počnu boriti za naklonost lijepe pjevačice
na osobnom kao i profesionalnom području, sve dok se aprila 1906 ne desi jak potres
koji skoro uništi San Francisco.
Montažu sekvenci potresa je kreirao naše gore list srpsko-američki režiser i montažer
