Povzetek:
V petdesetih letih je mlada Carrie Staley priča umoru med vožnjo z avtobusom v Brooklynu v New Yorku. Oče jo pošlje poletnimi počitnicami k sorodnikom v Missouri. Landy, Bea in Lucy Bretthorst jo toplo sprejemajo. Z Lucy sta enake starosti in hitro postaneta prijateljici.
Landyjeva sestra, Grace Bretthorst Jones, se po sedemnajstih letih v državni duševni bolnišnici vrne domov. Pri prečkanju ceste jo je povozil avto in Grace se huje poškoduje. Medtem ko se fizične poškodbe zacelijo, njeni možgani ne delujejo več normalno. Sčasoma se mož Dan loči od nje. Landy meni, da se je njeno stanje dovolj izboljšalo in zaprosi za njeno izpustitev iz bolnišnice. Direktor bolnišnice je zelo proti Gracini izpustitvi, saj verjame, da se ne bo mogla spoprijeti z zunanjim svetom. Landy ga prepriča, a ga direktor opozori, naj Grace ne puščajo same z otroki…
