Westleya, a glavni protagonist, čiji lik tumači George Arliss, je Mayer Amschel Rothschild jevrejski bankar iz Njemačke koji je krajem 18. vijeka osnovao znamenitu bankarsku dinastiju.
Radnja prikazuje kako njegovi sinovi osnivaju bankarske podružnice u različitim zemljama, te se s vremenom uspješno suprotstavljaju antisemitskim predrasudama, dobivaju plemićke titule i postaju dio uglednog društva. The House of Rothschild je bio komercijalno uspješan film, a godine 1935. je bio i nominiran za Oscara.
