Treba hrabrosti i vraškog smisla za humor da biste živjeli kao Arnold (Fierstein). Dok zarađuje za život kao imitator žena Virginia Hamm, Arnold misli da je pronašao pravu ljubav u naručju nastavnika Eda (Brian Kerwin), ali jednoga dana zatekne Eda u naručju... Žene. Arnold izbjegava ljubav sve dok ne upozna Alana (Matthew Broderick) te njih dvoje zajedno izgrade život i usvoje dijete. Ali kad Arnold pogine u nesreći, Ed odjednom ostane samohrani roditelj s dubokim vrelom osjećaja koje njegova majka (Anne Bancroft) ne može shvatiti, ali koje mora naučiti prihvatiti.
