Povzetek:
Admiral Hariman Nelson konstruisao je najmoderniju atomsku podmornicu sa "staklenim nosom" . Prvi put je zaplovio sa tom podmornicom na Severni pol. Kapetan je Li Krejn, čija je žena, Kejti Konors Nelsonova sekretarica. Admiralov najbliži saradnik je naučnik Lucius Emeri. U podmornici se nalaze i gosti: političari i dr. Suzan Hiler, koje admiral mora da uveri da je zaista reč o superpodmornici. Iznenada, začuće zvuk poput eksplozije i primetiti velike komade leda koji tonu. Podmornica će izroniti, a nebo doslovno goreti. Preko televizije će saznati da gori čitava Zemlja zato što se iz neobjašnjivih razloga zapalio Van Alenov radioaktivni pojas koji okružuje zemaljsku kuglu.
