16-ogodišnji Billy Kelly živi u pensilvanijskom gradiću na početku 20. veka.
Radi na teškom poslu u fabrici, živi sa majkom i ocem alkoholičarem. Želi što pre da
ode u Filadelfiju i tamo nađe bolji posao. Upoznaje Alice u koju se zaljubljuje, ali i
Johna Reesa, iscelitelja i duhovnog vođu koji ga uči da čita i uzima za svog pomoćnika.
