Povzetek:
General Dennis of the US Force in England in World War II finds that he must order his planes deeper and deeper into Germany to prevent the production of military jet planes that will turn the tide of battle to the Germans. He must fight congressmen, and his own chain of command to win the political battle before he can send his planes out. His problem is complicated by a very narrow window of good weather necessary to allow his effort to be successful. Adapted from a stage play, it attempts to look at the challenges of command in the political arena.

Na sastanku s novinarima u Ministarstvu informiranja 1943. u Londonu priopćeno je
da je prilikom posljednjeg bombardiranja njemačkih ciljeva izgubljeno 48 zrakoplova.
Američki ratni dopisnik Elmer Brockhurst (C. Bickford) smatra to katastrofom.
Zapovjednik američkog ratnog zrakoplovstva koji šalje bombardere u te akcije je
general K. C. Dennis (C. Gable), hrabar i častan čovjek koji želi što prije uništiti
tri njemačke tvornice koje proizvode lovačke zrakoplove bolje od savezničkih.
Njegov stožer nalazi se u Engleskoj. Kako su američka javnost i Kongres zabrinuti zbog
tolikog gubitka bombardera, šalju njegovog pretpostavljenog generala bojnika Rolanda
G. Kanea (W. Pidgeon), zrakoplovnog generala Cliftona I. Garneta (B. Donlevy) i novinara
Brockhursta da ispitaju situaciju. Garnet je s Denisom bio polaznik vojne akademije,
a sad se nalazi u nezahvalnoj ulozi neke vrste vojnog inspektora.
General Kane je, pak, jako osjetljiv na to što javnost misli o vojnom zrakoplovstvu,
a još je osjetljiviji na ono što od njega traže političari.
Upravo onog dana kad inspekcija stigne, sazna da su srušena 52 bombardera te da piloti
nisu pogodili tvornicu zrakoplova, nego tvornicu torpeda.
Dennis želi da akcija što prije počne, dok je vrijeme povoljno, no njegova bitka s
pretpostavljenima i politi- čarima bit će vrlo teška i neizvjesna.
Zapovjedna odgovornost izvrsna je ekranizacija drame Williama Wistera Hainesa.
Redatelj Sam Wood (1883-1949) bio je jedan od najsposobnijih holivudskih zanatlija
koji je od doba nijemog filma pa do smrti režirao osamdeset filmova.
Nakon ovog snimit će još samo dva filma. Našoj publici najpoznatija je njegova
ekranizacija Hemingwayeva romana Kome zvono zvoni (1943). Tridesetih godina režirao je
i dvije popularne komedije s braćom Marx - Noć u operi (1935) i Dan na trkama (1937).
