Glavna junakinja Ester, obična francuska žena s dobrim poslom, muškarcem i aktivnim društvenim životom. Ali jednog dana će slučajno raseći nogu u vrtu i ne odlazi odmah potražiti pomoć doktora. Kroz šalu, hirurg joj kaže: Jeste li sigurni da je noga?. Ovaj šala kao da Ester podstiče na pojačanu percepciju tela, što dovodi do destruktivnog samoponižavanja i samopovređivanja.
