    Film je snimljen prema istoimenoj noveli Heinricha Bölla.

    Film opisuje običnu priču običnog građanina koji misli da vodi
    zadovoljan i ispunjen život. Walter Fendrich je električar koji
    uglavnom održava strojeve za pranje rublja, odlično zarađuje,
    ima vlastiti auto (što u to poratno vrijeme nije nešto samo po
    sebi razumljivo), sprema se oženiti gazdinu kćer Ullu. Sve dok
    u grad ne stigne Hedwig, kćer očevog prijatelja...
