Ahasuerus (Xerxes I), King of the Persians, whose empire now extends from India to Egypt after the defeat of the Babylonians, is holding a celebratory banquet for his people in the citadel of Susa to display his wealth and splendor. When he summons his attractive wife Vashti, to show off her beauty to the guests, the proud queen refuses to come. The king promptly bans her from ever entering his presence again, and gives orders for the most beautiful young virgins in the land to be brought to him. The young Jewess Esther, adopted daughter of her uncle Mordecai, is among the girls selected; they are told to beautify themselves in the royal harem and prepare to spend the night with the king. Esther succeeds in enchanting the king with her extraordinary beauty and charm, and he makes her his queen. Ahasuerus (Xerxes I), kralj Perzijanaca, čije se carstvo proteže od Indije do Egipta
nakon poraza Babilonaca, organizira svečanost za svoj narod u zamku Susa da im pokaže
svoje bogatstvo i raskoš. Kada pozove svoju atraktivnu ženu Vashti da pokaže gostima
svoju ljepotu, ponosna kraljica odbije doći.
Kralj joj zabrani da nikada više ne smije biti u njegovoj prisutnosti i izda naređenje
da mu dovedu najljepše djevice u zemlji.
Mlada židovka Esther, usvojena kći njenog strica Mordokaja, je među odabranim djevojkama
koje trebaju provesti noć sa kraljem.
Esther očara kralja sa svojom izvanrednom ljepotom i šarmom, i on je učini svojom kraljicom.
Kralj promovira svog lojalnog podanika Hamana, čija je porodica je izrazito anti-jevrejska,
na mjesto prvog ministra kraljevstva.
Kada jevrejin Mardohej ne klekne pred Hamana kao i svi ostali, Hamans to iritira toliko jako
da počne osjećati duboku mržnju do jevrejskog naroda.
Uspije nagovoriti kralja da donese zakon po kojem Jevreje iz svih zemalja mogu biti proganjani
