SADRŽAJ:

Umirovljeni vojni časnik Richard Briand-Charmery, poznat pod nadimkom Komandant, voli kocku i troši svaki novčić na oklade konjskih utrka. Kad nema sreće, daje prijateljima lažne tipove, znajući da će dobiti dio od prijatelja koji dobije okladu. Jedan dan Richard upozna stariju ali vatrenu Maud i provede noć s njom o svom trošku. Da bi platio račun za tu ekstravagantnu večer, pokupa prevariti naivnog vlasnika Ripeuxa.
