Povzetek:

Po nizu neuspešnih poskusov samomora se depresivni mladi milijonar Arthur Lempereur sklene udeležiti križarjenja po Daljnem vzhodu v spremstvu služabnika Léona, svoje zaročenke in njenih staršev. Ko izve še to, da je obubožal, se odloči obesiti, a ga od namere uspešno odvrne kitajski računovodja g. Goh in z njim sklene dogovor. Arthurju se bo izpolnila želja po smrti, če prej podpiše zavarovalno pogodbo - po kateri bosta njegova zaročenka in g. Goh dobila denarno premijo milijon dolarjev, če Arthur umre v naslednjem mesecu. Kmalu po tistem, ko nanj strelja neznanec, Arthur hipoma doživi razsvetljenje in ugotovi, da bi vendarle rad živel. Z Léonom morata zdaj najti g. Goha in ga prepričati, naj razveljavi pogodbo.
