Ostarjela glumica Jessica Medlicott (Katharine Hepburn) nađe se u sudnici zbog prekršenog obećanja danog mladom ljubavniku Alfredu Prattu (Leigh Lawson), na čiju je bračnu ponudu prvotno pristala a potom odustala; a koji je pak očito zainteresiraniji za njen novac negoli samu Jessicu.
