Povzetek:


Ex-Army officer Jameson takes a job a prison guard at San Quentin. Joe, the brother of his new girlfriend May, is sentenced to the prison for robbery. When Jameson tries to separate lawbreakers from hardened criminals, badguy Hansen tries to stir up trouble by telling Joe about Jameson's interest in his sister.

    Bivši vojni oficir Jameson se zapošljava kao glavni čuvar u zatvoru San Quentin. 
    Joe, brat njegove nove devojke May, posle pljačke dospeva u taj zatvor kao zatvorenik.
    Kada Jameson pokuša da razdvoji obične prekršitelje zakona od okorelih kriminalaca, 
    zlikovac Hansen pokušava da stvori probleme tako što će Joeu reći za Jamesonovu vezu sa njegovom sestrom.

    Film je socijalni komentar ere depresije. I čuvari i zatvorenici su u zamci zatvorskih zidova i rešetki, 
    što predstavlja beznadežnost situacije u Americi 1930-ih. Čak i ako pobegnu, nema posla van zatvora. 
    Joe (Bogart) shvata tu beznadežnost prekasno.
