Povzetek:
Polovinom devetnaestog vijeka, u vrijeme sve većeg raslojavanja Američkog društva, na istočnoj obali živi Dženi Hejgen (Hedi Lamar) djevojka sa siromašnim šansama za uspjeh u takvom okruženju. Bježeći od bijede, majka ostavlja Dženi sa ocem posesivnim alkoholičarom koji uslijed jedne žučne prepirke umire.
Čudnim spletom okolnosti, djevojka se udaje za bogatog lokalnog veleposjednika, Postera, mada je razlika u godinama ogromna, te postaje maćeha svoje ljubavi iz djetinjstva Avrama. Čudnim spletom okolnosti prisiljava Avrama da u nesreći ubije vlastitog oca, poslije čega se perspektivan ali nesrećan mladić odaje alkoholu. Džejn se udaje za predradnika Džona Evereda. Čini se da je njihova ljubav vječna. Međutim bogatu nasljednica čitav život prati zla kob mitskih dimenzija.
