Carroll, inclined to waywardness while intoxicated, meets Jackson, and resenting the latter's refusal to drink, attacks him savagely, destroying his sight. Carroll escapes to a distant city, changes his name, and eventually gains much wealth. Many years elapse. His daughter, Ethel, goes to boarding school and there meets the daughter of Jackson, Grace, and invites her for a holiday visit. Grace and George, Ethel's brother, fall in love and decide to marry. Grace brings her father to Carroll's home, and the meeting of the two men is an intensely dramatic scene. Jackson bitterly arraigns Carroll, and refuses his consent to the marriage, returning home with heart-broken Grace. Some days later Carroll accidentally upsets a lamp, which explodes with terrific force, burning his face and blinding him. He bows resignedly to the blow, seeing in it the hand of Providence, which has visited upon him retribution for the errors of his youth. Accompanied by George he calls upon Jackson and begs him...
